SharePoint 2010 Solution for “The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold enforced by the administrator.”

(This is something I have been trying to resolve for the last couple of days, little bit of background":

We have a custom application that was migrated from SharePoint 2007 to 2010, it has a list that has over 5,000 records. when a user navigates to any of the list views, he gets the following error:

Error

“The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold enforced by the administrator.” Screenshot:

Solution

Do the following:

  1. Update your list views in the database by following the steps in my previous post: http://www.dennispoint.com/2012/05/sharepoint-2010-error-this-item-is-no.html. Another solution would be to remove the ListView webpart from the list view affected and adding it again in SharePoint 2010.
  2. Go to list settings –> Index all the fields that are being used in your query (i.e. Grouping, Sorting, or filtering). If you get any errors here, increase list throttling temporarily and then do the indexing, don’t forget to undo the change once done.
  3. Update your list definition (if it’s a custom list with a custom list definition to use the XSLT viewer instead of the ListView webpart).
